SCB seeks a North American Policy Director (PD) to play two critical roles: (1) to advance the policy work of the North America Section in bringing conservation science to bear on the section's property policy initiatives, by means of outreach to agency and legislative staff, the scientific community, and the general public; and (2) to empower SCB's members by providing them with the information and skills necessary to influence the policy process themselves.

The North American Policy Director is responsible for coordinating al of SCB's policy activities in the U.S. and Canada, is expected to maintain an office in the Executive Office of SCB in Washington, D.C. This position require experience in communications, building professional relationships with legislative and executive branches in Washington D.C., as well as administrative agencies working in conservation policy and management, and working with Canadian conservation scientists. 


  • Lead the North American Section of SCB by prioritizing pending policy issues that warrant scientific involvement.  The North American Policy Director will work with SCB leadership to crag and implement official responses to such issues. 
  • Work with SCB leadership and members to develop proactive policy initiatives that emerge from conservation science, such as commenting on federal rule making, providing expert witness testimony, briefing legislators and staffs, and creating background documents for use by policy-makers. 
  • Explore and enhance opportunities for collaborative activities with other scientific societies and nongovernmental organizations. 
  • Design and implement mechanisms to keep SCB members apprised of North American conservation policy issues, and enable the membership to engage in policy through training opportunities and web-based policy tools.
  • Communicate regularly with SCB members and provide training opportunities at conferences and on-site in Washington D.C.


  • Master's degree or law degree in conservation law, public policy, environmental policy, or closely related field.  Five to seven years of experience working in environmental policy, law, advocacy, or communications. 
  • Demonstrated ability to complete high-quality, original written work product on issues relating to environmental policy. 
  • Experience in fund-raising. 
  • Working knowledge of conservation science and ability to communicate with conservation researchers on policy implications. 
  • Successful track record conceiving and implementing policy activities, building partnerships among NGO's, professional societies, and working directly with federal/state lawmakers. 
  • Excellent written communication, oral, and interpersonal communication skills, including public speaking.

AGI Workforce Program Internship Opportunities

Director, Wildlife Protection - Human Society of the United States

Ascension Island Government - Three Marine/Fisheries Scientist Posts

Ascension Island harbors globally important marine biodiversity, potentially representing a unique assemblage of western and eastern Atlantic flora and fauna. The Island also supports a commercially valuable pelagic tuna fishery, and an inshore recreational fishery. Currently, however, a paucity of baseline scientific data from the marine environment and a lack of capacity in marine and fisheries science within Ascension Island Government (AIG) are major barriers to the effective management and conservation of the Island's marine resources.  Addressing these issues has been identified as a strategic priority for AIG and is the objective of the new 'Ascension Island Marine Sustainability (AIMS)' project funded by the Darwin Initiative. The AIMS project will be delivered through a partnership between AID and fisheries scientists at the Falklands-based South Atlantic Environment Research Institute (SAERI), with support from the RSPB (royal for the Protection of Birds), BAS (British Antarctic Survey) and the Shallow Marine Surveys Group (SMSG). The Senior Marine/Fisheries Scientist will be responsible for coordinating the AIMS project and will head up a new Marine and Fisheries Unit within AIG Conservation Department, with facilities including a fully equipped fisheries laboratory, RIB and SCUBA centre (compressor, wash facilities, etc.). The other post holders will also be based at the new Marine and Fisheries Unit where they will assist the Senior Marine/Fisheries Scientists in the delivery of the AIMS project.  This is an exciting opportunity to joint a small but growing conservation team working in one of the work;s most unusual environments and to play a significant role in the development of the Ascension's first marine fisheries unit. 

Senior Marine/Fisheries Scientists

The Ascension Island Government Conservation Department is currently seeking applications for the position of Senior Marine/Fisheries Scientists from experience postdoctoral researchers with a demonstrably strong track record of marine fieldwork, data collection, and analysis. 

The main dusts of the post are:

  • To develop and implement a strategy for the on-going monitoring and management of Ascension's in shore line and vessel fisheries
  • The examination of resource dynamics in the offshore fishery from catch and effort data and through the deployment of pop-up archival satellite tags. 
  • To coordinate by-catch risk assessments for seabirds, turtles, and sharks in the commercial fishing fleet.

Marine/Fisheries Scientists (Biology)

The Ascension Island Government Conservation Department is currently seeking applications for the position of Marine/Fisheries Scientists (Biology) from graduate marine scientists with a strong track record of marine fieldwork, specimen preparation and data collection.

Marine/Fisheries Scientists (Technician)

The Ascension Island Government Conservation Department is currently seeking applications for the position of Marine/Fisheries Scientists (Technician) from experienced divers with a background in marine biology and/or fisheries management. 

The main duties of the post are:

The Alaska Region is advertising a GS-401-13 Supervisory Biologist position in Anchorage.  The position leads the Polar Bear Program within the Region’s Marine Mammals Management Office.  The program is responsible for polar bear management and conservation in Alaska, including co-management with Alaska Native organizations.  The supervisor provides direction and oversight to meet international, national and regional polar bear goals and objectives, including drafting and implementing National and International Polar Bear Recovery Plans.  The polar bear program works closely with the Service's Division of International Conservation as well as with formal US delegations to international meetings and plays an active role in meeting planning, preparations and international information exchange.  The position supervises a diverse staff to develop and implement regulations; policies; priorities; co-management strategies; and scientific programs for the polar bear.

Internship in Amphibian Health & Conservation

A new internship in amphibian health is being offered through the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute (SCBI). The intern will assist in an ongoing study of Ranavirus infection in amphibians throughout Virginia, and the information gained from this research will help protect wild amphibian populations in this region.

Activities and Responsibilities

  • Monitor signs of wood frog (Rana sylvatica) breeding at ponds throughout northern VA
  •  Learn to identify signs of Ranavirus infection in amphibians
  • Collect and euthanize tadpoles for Ranavirus testing
  • Participate in amphibian-related outreach and education efforts


This is an unpaid internship. We will give strong support of the applicant’s pursuit of college credit for experience gained during this internship.


Housing at SCBI (Front Royal, VA) is available for a full-time intern.

Major duties include:
Conduct lighting inspections from the beach at night; complete compliance enforcement actions including all associated documentation according to a chain of procedures; conduct plan reviews for compliance with the ordinance; provide constructive public relations; provide project leadership for innovative lighting solutions; research and write grant proposals; work a flexible schedule; cary out other duties associated with and in support of Volusia Country Sea Turtle Lighting Ordinance and Health Conservation Plan.

The White House Council on Environmental Quality (CEQ) interns are given a wide range of assignments including conducting research, managing incoming inquiries, attending meetings, and writing memos on a variety of environmental issues.  Interns have the opportunity to be involved in groundbreaking projects, working closely with staff from all levels and a variety of backgrounds.  The pace in the office is fast, so accuracy and attention to detail are absolute requirements.  Interns can expect to begin with the basics and gradually add more specialized projects as they gain experience.

Climate Change and Mosquito Dynamics GRA Position

A Graduate Research Assistantship (GRA) is available to assist in a study on the effect of climate change on the ecological dynamics of mosquito Aides aegypti , the most important vector of urban human disease.  The work explores how changes in temperature and increases in the need for people in developing world cities to store water influence A. aegypti  populations.  The work involves synthesis of a longitudinal dataset on A. aegypti  (adult size, recruitment, spatial patterns, and habitat feature) with remotely sensed bio-physical and climate imagery, and surveys of human water management practices and perceptions toward water insecurity.  The assistantship may result in co-authorship on publication; candidate need not be in Annapolis full time.

  • Coordination and organization of workshops and conferences to analyze, evaluate, and synthesize aspects of issues in environmental science.  This include attending workshops, conferences and fairs to disseminate SERC's materials and program information, as well as communicating with carious other organizations.  
  • Coordination of various promotion events and activities, such as tours, lectures, open house, demonstrations & exhibits, designed to increase program visibility and strength as well as to engage, recruit and train participants in Citizen Science and other education or outreach projects.  Assisting the SERC Directorate in assuring that there is adequate funding to support the Citizen Science Program.  This is accomplished by providing assistance in the setting of participant fees and/or in the preparing of grant proposals and fund-raising materials.  Assures that Citizen Science Program projects and goals are closely coordinated and aligned with the Directorate's administrative objectives and strategic plan for public outreach and for scientific research.   

In addition to working closely with the public across a diverse range of ages and socio-economic backgrounds, the position requires working with a team of principal investigators, educators, technicians, undergraduate interns, graduate students, post-doctoral fellows, and visiting scientists.
